New York dermatologist recognized for advancing equity in skin and hair health; public voting for the Anthem Community Voice Award is open through October 29
NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Dr. Dina Strachan, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Aglow Dermatology and FindABlackDoctor.com, has been named a finalist in the 6th Annual Anthem Awards for her work advancing equity in skin and hair health through medicine, media, and advocacy.
The recognition highlights decades of work expanding access to informed, effective dermatologic care across skin tones and hair textures. The Anthem Awards honor purpose- and mission-driven work creating social impact worldwide. Winners will be announced November 5, 2026.
“Being named an Anthem Awards finalist affirms that equity isn’t a side project. It’s what excellent medicine looks like,” said Dr. Strachan. “When we know how to take care of everyone, everyone is better served.”
A career advancing equitable care
A graduate of Harvard College and Yale School of Medicine who completed her dermatology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Strachan began her career serving patients in South Central Los Angeles. As director of medical education at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, she combined clinical care with training physicians in a community with limited access to dermatologists.
She later founded Aglow Dermatology in Manhattan, where she treats patients of all skin types, with particular expertise in skin of color, hair loss, and scalp disorders. Her work addresses disparities that can persist even when patients have insurance and financial resources: gaps in clinicians’ familiarity with conditions affecting different skin tones and hair textures.
Dr. Strachan has published research on acne in skin of color and hair care in African American girls, lectured nationally, and taught dermatology residents through her faculty role at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Extending the reach of medicine
In 2005, Dr. Strachan founded FindABlackDoctor.com, a free directory connecting patients with Black physicians across specialties. The initiative grew from recognizing the need for a resource that helped patients locate doctors whose backgrounds and perspectives could inform their care.
She also uses media to bring dermatologic knowledge to broader audiences. A featured expert in The Black Beauty Effect, she has contributed to public education through outlets including The New York Times, KevinMD, Essence, and The Atlantic.
Dr. Strachan has published research and commentary on acne in skin of color, hair care in African American girls, dermatologic manifestations of HIV in people of color, disparities in the dermatology workforce, and telemedicine. She has lectured nationally and currently teaches dermatology residents at Bellevue Hospital through her faculty role at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Her advocacy includes service on New York State’s Board for Professional Medical Conduct and authoring a 2024 American Academy of Dermatology resolution defending diversity initiatives in the specialty.
